What to Expect at Your Child’s First Headshot Session in St. Louis

A great headshot isn’t just a photo — it’s your child’s first introduction to every casting director, agent, and director they’ll ever audition for. In St. Louis, where opportunities at places like The Muny and COCA are very real, it pays to get it right the first time

So your kid just landed their first audition callback, or maybe they’ve been bitten by the performance bug and you’re ready to make it official. Either way, you’ve arrived at the same question every St. Louis theater parent arrives at eventually:

What actually happens at a professional child actor headshot session?

If you’ve never done this before, the whole thing can feel a little mysterious — and maybe a little stressful. Will my child freeze up? How long does it take? What do we even wear?

Take a breath. At Shari Photography, we work with young performers and their families every week, and we’re here to make this experience feel easy, fun, and genuinely exciting for your child. Here’s a complete walkthrough of what to expect from start to finish.

Why Professional Headshots Matter for St. Louis Young Performers

Before we get into logistics, let’s talk about why this matters.

St. Louis has a thriving performing arts scene for young talent. The Muny — the nation’s oldest and largest outdoor musical theater — regularly casts local youth performers. COCA (Center of Creative Arts) offers youth performance programs and showcases that put young artists in front of real audiences. Local casting agencies, school productions, and community theater groups are actively looking for new faces.

In all of these settings, a professional headshot is your child’s first impression. It arrives before they do. It speaks before they speak. A blurry school photo or a cropped family vacation snapshot simply won’t cut it — and experienced directors and agents can spot the difference immediately.

A professional session gives your child a polished, confident, age-appropriate image that says: this family takes this seriously.

Before the Session: How to Prepare

Book in Advance

St. Louis family schedules fill up fast, especially during school theater season (fall) and summer program audition windows. We recommend booking at least 2–3 weeks out so you have time to prepare without stress. You can book your child’s session here (link to your booking page).

Pick the Right Outfits

This is where most parents overthink things — and we get it. Here’s the simple version: bring 2–3 outfit options. Think solid, mid-tone colors (navy, burgundy, forest green, soft gray). Avoid busy patterns, logos, or anything with large graphics. The goal is for the viewer’s eye to go straight to your child’s face, not their shirt.

For younger children, something they feel comfortable and happy in matters more than something technically “perfect.” Confidence reads on camera. Stiffness does too.

Get a Good Night’s Sleep

This sounds obvious, but it makes an enormous difference. A rested child is a relaxed child, and relaxed children take beautiful, natural-looking photos. Try to avoid a late night before the session.

Skip the Heavy Breakfast

A light meal is fine — we just want to avoid tummy aches or sluggishness. Bring a small snack if your child has a long drive.

Talk It Up Beforehand

For kids who are shy or nervous, frame the session as something fun, not a performance with stakes. Tell them they get to play around in front of a camera with someone whose whole job is to make them look amazing. Because that’s exactly what it is.

At the Studio: What the Session Looks Like

Shari Photography is located at 5205 Gravois Ave, St. Louis — a comfortable, professional studio environment designed to feel welcoming, not intimidating.

When You Arrive

You’ll be greeted warmly and given a few minutes to settle in, hang up your outfit options, and let your child get comfortable in the space. We don’t rush. The first few minutes are just about letting your kid shake off any nerves and start to feel at home.

Wardrobe and Styling Check

We’ll do a quick look at your outfit options together and talk about which will photograph best for your child’s coloring, age, and the type of roles they’re likely to pursue. This collaborative moment helps parents feel confident they’re not guessing.

The Shoot Itself

Most child actor headshot sessions run between 45 minutes and an hour. We photograph in multiple outfits and capture a range of expressions — from bright and open to more serious and focused — because different productions call for different looks.

We use professional studio lighting that’s flattering and consistent. Your child won’t be squinting into the sun or dealing with unpredictable outdoor elements.

For kids who are a bit reserved at first, we have plenty of tricks up our sleeve for drawing out genuine, natural expressions. This is genuinely the fun part.

Parents in the Room

For younger children, a parent in the room is usually a great idea. For older kids and teens, sometimes they actually loosen up more without Mom or Dad right there — and that’s completely normal. We’ll follow your child’s lead.

After the Session: Selecting Your Images

Within a few days of your session, you’ll receive access to your proofing gallery. You’ll be able to review all the images from your session and select your favorites for final editing and delivery.

For child actor headshots, we generally recommend selecting:

  • One bright, approachable commercial look
  • One more focused or character-driven theatrical look

These two images cover most audition submission requirements and give your child versatility across different types of roles.
