In St. Louis, real opportunities exist for young performers — and a professional headshot is the first step toward getting in the room. We make that step easy, fun, and stress-free for your whole family

Your child has the talent. They have the drive. They’ve been lighting up every room, every stage, and every school production they’ve ever walked into. Now it’s time to make sure the people who can open doors for them actually see it.

Professional Headshots for Young Performers Who Are Ready to Be Seen

At Shari Photography, we specialize in professional child actor headshots for young performers across the St. Louis area. Our sessions are relaxed, fun, and specifically designed to capture the authentic energy and personality that casting directors, agents, and program coordinators are actually looking for.

St. Louis Has Real Opportunities for Young Performers

St. Louis is not a small market for young talent. The Muny — the nation’s oldest and largest outdoor musical theater — holds youth auditions every season and has launched the careers of performers who got their start right here. COCA (Center of Creative Arts) runs robust youth performance programs that connect young artists with professional-level training and visibility. Local casting agencies, community theaters, and regional film and commercial productions are actively looking for fresh faces.

In every one of these pipelines, your child’s headshot arrives before they do. It speaks before they speak. A professional image signals to decision-makers that your family is serious — and that this young performer is ready to work.

What Makes a Great Child Actor Headshot

A great child actor headshot does one thing above everything else: it looks exactly like your kid on their best day.

Not stiff. Not over-posed. Not like a school photo. Like a real, confident, naturally expressive version of the child who walks into every audition ready to give it everything.

At Shari Photography, we achieve this through:

A relaxed, unhurried session environment. We never rush. The first few minutes are always about getting your child comfortable in the space — because the best expressions come after the nerves settle.

Professional studio lighting. Our studio at 5205 Gravois Ave is equipped with professional lighting that’s flattering, consistent, and specifically calibrated for headshot work. No squinting, no unpredictable shadows, no weather variables.

An experienced eye for authentic expression. We know how to draw out genuine smiles, focused intensity, and natural personality from young performers at every age and temperament — including the shy ones and the wiggly ones.

Multiple looks in one session. We photograph your child in 2–3 outfit changes to give you versatile options — a bright commercial look, a more focused theatrical look, and anything in between that fits your child’s type.

Frequently Asked Questions

How old does my child need to be for a headshot session? We work with young performers of all ages. Whether your child is 6 or 16, we tailor the session pace, coaching style, and posing approach to fit their age and personality.

How long does a child actor headshot session take? Most sessions run between 45 minutes and one hour. We build in plenty of time so nothing feels rushed, and your child has space to warm up and settle into the experience naturally.

How many outfit changes are included? We recommend bringing 2–3 outfit options. We’ll look at everything together when you arrive and decide which combinations will photograph best for your child’s coloring, age, and the types of roles they’re pursuing.

What should my child wear? Solid, mid-tone colors work best — navy, burgundy, forest green, soft gray. Avoid busy patterns, large logos, and anything so new or stiff that your child feels uncomfortable. The goal is for their face and personality to be the focus, not their outfit.

Will my child be nervous? What if they freeze up? This is the most common concern we hear from parents — and it almost never becomes the problem they feared. We are experienced at helping children relax, laugh, and forget about the camera entirely. Give us 10 minutes and most kids are having a blast.

How soon will we receive the photos? Your proofing gallery will be delivered within a few days of your session. You’ll review all images and select your favorites for final editing and delivery.

Do parents stay in the room during the session? For younger children, having a parent present is usually helpful and welcome. For older kids and teens, they sometimes loosen up more independently — we’ll follow your child’s lead and do whatever helps them feel most comfortable.

How often should we update my child’s headshots? Young performers grow and change quickly. As a general rule, update headshots whenever there’s a significant change in appearance — a major growth spurt, a new haircut, braces on or off, or simply a year or more of natural maturation. Casting directors notice when a headshot no longer matches the child walking in the door.
