Below are some questions you should ask of all your photographers. I’ve included my responses to help you narrow your choices of photographers.
Why should I book Shari Photography?
- Experience: 5 years and over 100 weddings as lead photographer. There can be no mistakes on your day. I bring a wealth of expertise which means I won’t miss the important moments or give you bad photographs. An inexperienced or budget photographer cannot and will not make the same
- Creative: Clients book Shari Photography because they want both the classical poses and the creative photographs. I provide photographs that have both the timeless quality to them in addition to the creative and bold pictures. I don’t have a template- so your wedding will have unique photographs. Too many budget photographers follow a set list of “creative” shots. Bold, Beautiful, Unique is my style.
- Reliable: My reviews speak for themselves- 100% 5 star ratings. When you book me, I am available for any questions about your wedding- not just the photography questions. When should I have makeup complete? What time should we have the first dance? How can I keep the flowers from drying? I’m dedicated to the needs of my clients. Weekend Wedding photographers will see you on the day of your wedding- I will available from the day you book me.
What is your shooting style?
I use a blend of classical and contemporary styles. I am inspired by fashion photography to create dynamic images that are fun and timeless in quality. This means that you will receive a range of photographs that balance the classical looks with more contemporary styles- something your parents and you will love. Bold, Dynamic, and Beautiful.
In addition to looking at the works of fashion photographers, I spend countless hours practicing posing with models in my studio. This allows me to properly pose my brides in ways that make them look spectacular.
Wedding photographer experience?
I have photographed over 100 weddings and counting as the Lead photographer.
I do limited Wedding bookings- 10-20 per year – and I only book one wedding a weekend. Be wary of photographers who double or triple book weddings on a weekend.
Photographing weddings is exhausting and caution should be used when booking a photographer who hustles for as many weddings as they can on a weekend Chances are they will either out source your wedding or potentially be exhausted if your wedding is their third one. Ask your perspective photographer how many weddings they will book on a weekend.
Are you the lead photographer? What about the 2nd Photographer?
When you book Shari Photography, you are booking me as the Lead Photographer. 2nd Photographers that work with me are not holding bags, lights, or other tasks. They are photographers who are dedicated to their craft and they are there to take pictures. I only work with select photographers who share the same positive energy about weddings. You are hiring a team of dedicated professionals as part of your Wedding Team. Please ask your photographer about their 2nd Shooters and their roles.
Be aware of amateur photographers who wish to experiment as a lead photographer. Many amateurs offer low prices in order to build their wedding photography portfolio and also lack the professional equipment.
Being a Lead Photographer is extremely complex. Beyond taking pictures you have to wear different hats- photographer, wedding planner, psychologist etc..
Can your photographer organize 200 guests for your bubble exit? Is your photographer confident enough to keep the makeup artist on schedule? Will your photographer be able to handle a happy unruly wedding party? Can your photographer be confident in dealing with the mothers?
You should hire an experienced wedding photographer who has shot at least 20 to 30 wedding as a lead photographer.
Do you edit and color correct my images?
Post processing is essential. I will edit every image you will receive- typically 1000 plus images organized into folder. All images are either edited in color or Black and White.
Many photographers will correct only few 100 images and some of them will never correct any. This means that you will end up with a disk of all the images (potentially thousands) of pictures that look flat, with poor color, or not balanced. Be aware of the Shoot and Burn photographers. They will give you disk of 1000s of unedited images. Make sure your photographer edits all the images.
Also, be aware of excessive black and white images in a photographers portfolio. Photographers who don’t have the equipment for photographing in a church’s dark setting or are not experienced in using their flashes in a reception, will try to hide poorly exposed images as Black and White “artistic” shots. Many black and white images or images with funky edits could be a warning about a photographers skill in low light situations.
What kind of equipment do you use?
I use top quality professional Canon camera (5D Mark III and 1Ds) along with the finest quality L lenses from Canon. Canon and Nikon camera and lenses are the only professional brand your photographer should use.
Backups- I bring 3 camera Bodies, 4 flashes, over half a dozen lenses, and more to each wedding. You photographer cannot rely on 1 camera and flash.
What’s in my bag?
Bodies- Canon 5D Mk3 and Mk 2. Canon 1D MK4 backup.
Lenses- 50 mm 1.2 L, 85 mm 1.2 L, 100mm 2.8 L Macro, 24-70 2.8 L, 16-35 2.8 L, 70-200 2.8 L.
Flashes- 600 and 580 Speedlight with Pocketwizard Triggers.
Do you have insurance?
I carry general business, equipment and liability insurance, and Omission and Errors Insurance. Shari Photography is a registered LLC.
Professional photographers must have insurance for their business. Insurance protects the photographer against equipment theft, but more importantly it provides liability protection in case of injuries. If your photographer does not have insurance, they are either new to the industry, or simply aren’t taking their business seriously.
If my event last longer then anticipated, will you stay? Is there an extra charge?
I will never leave the event until I have all the images needed for your wedding. Weeks before the wedding I create a detailed timeline of your wedding (much like a wedding planner) and we review it carefully. This takes care of most unexpected situations. My rule of thumb is that if the extra time is not excessive, I will not charge an extra fee.
Make sure you hire a flexible photographer who will not walk out when their time is up.
Is there a contract?
The contract I use clearly states all the information you will need to know. It is an important document for both of us.
Please be VERY cautious if your photographer does not have a contract.
